News today that the popular Tamarack Surf Beach in Carlsbad may cost $8 per day to park... even if you're just there for a quick session. The state's Parks and Recreation Department is looking to help fill a $13.3 million budget gap by charging people to park in the 122-space parking lot but the city of Carlsbad has asked for a one-month postponement while it considers the proposal: State's rising tide of debt may be felt by beachgoers

The idea of paying for parking doesn't sit well with surfers and other people parked at the Tamarack lot this week.

Nowell Lantz said he used to live across the street and still goes to the Tamarack beach, officially named Carlsbad State Beach, regularly to surf. He said he has a private place to park if the state beach starts charging a fee.

"If I didn't have that I'd be pissed," said Lantz, who lives in Encinitas. "A lot of people wouldn't be happy about paying if they paid taxes in Carlsbad."

The state has always had the right to charge for parking but previously Carlsbadhad paid the $36,000 a year to keep the parking lot free.

Government in this state

Government in this state has lost their f'n' minds.. charge me and my fam to park there.. fine.. I'll walk my kids from blocks away.. and block traffic while I park.. and block traffic while I pull the wagon across the street..

What happened to the idea of California having free access the beach..

I say it's time for Surfrider to stage somethin.. cancel a clean-up where we pick up itty bits of trash and fill waaaay too many plastic bags for what we pick up.. and stage a park-in instead..

Maybe we should all get on the coast highway at 10am some Saturday.. and just stop... put on our blinkers and look for parking.

Anyone??

at the very least they

at the very least they should have a pay-by-the-hour option

I recently moved to Carlsbad

I recently moved to Carlsbad from San Clemente and one thing I love here is the free parking by the beach - seems it's as it should be!  The City of San Clemente started charging for parking by it's popular beach accesses and then rabidly enforcing and it changed the character of going down to the beach - no longer as relaxing and no longer free.  And the waste and irritation of driving around and around to find a parking space a little further away in a nearby neighborhood if you don't have the money....what are we really saving?  I'd rather preserve the wonderful feeling and atmosphere of Carlsbad the way that it is now.  I've seen what happens when they start charging.

I could not say it better

I could not say it better myself.

My husband used to work for

My husband used to work for State Parks.  The reason they are always coming up with shortfalls to their budget is because they have too many administrators, many of whom are incompetent, and they'd rather cut lifeguards, charge exorbitant fees for parking at beaches and parks we ALREADY pay for with our tax dollars, etc. rather than clean up their act or make cuts to their own administrative positions.
