Residents in Ocean Beach started seeing new tsunami warning signs appearing at the beach. These signs are part of an effort to increase public awareness of the threat and to provide safety information in case a tsunami were to hit the San Diego coastline.

The National Weather service and the city will spend about $22,500 for the signs to be placed from Ocean Beach to Torrey Pines. Each sign, with an arrow pointing (*gasp*) inland, will be installed in hopes to mark the city as "tsunami ready" by the National Weather service in 2010.
"The message we put out is get two miles inland or 40 feet up," San Diego lifeguard Sgt. John Sandmeyer, with the said. California coastline is real, he said.
"By placing the signs around the coastal zone it does give people that back of the mind thought that this is a real threat along the coast line," Sandmeyer said.
