Simply put, surfing, now, is big business. Fear not this is not the part of the column where I charge off on some fuming rant about how surfwear companies are immoral entities driven by tycoons lighting cigars with $100 bills, and that the ASR trade show is the worst thing in the world because it muddies up the lineup with money. No, luckily, I don't need to do that, because the fact of the matter is that the people that run these companies aren't cigar smokers – they're surfers. The most successful ones, in fact, were founded by some of our sport's best surfers. And the most successful ones don't forget the fact that they're still run by surfers. And down at the trade show, those people are all surfers as well. And the people that buy those products, even if they're only going out during the summer months, they're all surfers too. |
