On Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa 73 surfers, aged 7 to 67, attempted to break the world record for number of surfers on one wave. Although the results have not been officially verified, hundreds of onlookers viewed the event and recorded it with photos and videos. The ride lasted for 5 seconds.
The record attempt was preceded by a debate on the Great White Shark situation in Western Cape waters and the City’s Shark Safety Strategy, which is due to be released later this week, will also be discussed.

SA surfers in record attempt The event was a fundraiser for the Shark Spotters, a safety program under which people with binoculars, flags and sirens at two popular beaches near Cape Town warn swimmers of lurking sharks, which are common in the area.
A South African lifeguard last month had his foot bitten off and later amputated in hospital when a shark attacked him during a training exercise off a beach near Cape Town.
The official record for surfers on one wave is 44. It was set by the Lahinch Surf School in Ireland in May.
