The 75-pound English bulldog was just one of many canines trying to be top dog at the fourth annual surf-dog competition put on by Loews Coronado Bay Resort yesterday.

To lesser dogs, heading into the chilly surf under the gray skies at Imperial Beach might have given them – excuse this – paws. But not a fierce competitor like Dozer.

"He's a typical bulldog, with a low center of gravity. He just hangs on and refuses to give up," Hokstad said. "He's not a water dog, so he's got the motivation to stay on the board."

Is that how its done?

Surfing dog (and family) becoming celebrities

The SignOnSanDiego article Surfing dog, girl and dad ride the wave of fame tells of a family who recently won a dog-surfing contest in Imperial Beach and are quickly becoming "mini-celebrities":

The ride isn't quite over for Chandler, Tyler and Zoey, who all surfed regularly together before the contest. Zoey is being fitted for her own wet suit and may be the main character in a children's book, Chandler said.

The "Montel Williams" episode aired last week, and Chandler is trying to work out a time to appear on "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

They also are waiting to hear more details of a trip to Petco Park for next season's Dog Day of Summer event, where fans get to take their dogs to the game. Chandler said he was approached by Petco officials who suggested he, Tyler and Zoey throw out the first pitch at the game.
