day at the beachHelping underprivileged kids enjoy sun and surf!

Welcome to Day at the Beach! "Kids’ Day" is an annual non-profit event featuring a full day of sun, fun and surfing instruction for underprivileged children in San Diego County.

Now in its 20th year, over 60 children from St. Vincent de Paul Shelter for Homeless Families, located in San Diego downtown, are bused to the beach at La Jolla Shores for an unforgettable experience. The kids receive surfing lessons from WindanSea Surf Club volunteers and enjoy a beachside barbecue lunch, complete with bags of goodies donated by local and national sponsors. The day is about learning and building self-esteem as much as it is about fun. The surfing lessons teach coordination, confidence, teamwork and an appreciation of nature. The kids benefit greatly by learning these skills from positive, adult role models in a fun environment.

The event was a success! 145 volunteers showed up to help the kids surf at La Jolla Shores. Even though surfing is an event of selfishness this SignOnSanDiego article Wave of Giving tells us

If we're to believe the conventional wisdom, then surfing at its root is nothing but a selfish sport, the purview of overgrown children and hapless, jobless bums, a time-wasting, go-nowhere pastime that really doesn't add much to the culture and only serves as another clever waste of time dreamed up by the slackers. Yes, that's the conventional wisdom, antiquated though it is.

The Windansea Surf Club, for instance, has for the past 20 years held "Kids Day At The Beach," providing underprivileged children with an opportunity to surf for a day.

"These kids would have no means of getting to the beach if it weren't for this event," says Adam Bloomberg, Windansea Surf Club president. "And we're not trying to change their lives. All we're trying to do is to put a smile on their face for one day. That's our No. 1 goal."
